Styly Cee (DJ/Live - Hip-hop)

Producer/DJ/emcee Styly Cee has been instrumental in providing SON with fat instrumentals from day one, and is responsible for many of the classic tracks on the label. Original Notts B-boy and professional consumer of tea & biscuits, here’s a bit of history in his own words:

I've been into hip-hop since about 1983, when I was 11. In 1985 I started going regularly to the legendary Saturday afternoon breaking sessions at Rock City in Nottingham, getting the true roots and foundation of hip-hop culture. I think the first 12" I bought was Afrika Bamabaataa’s ‘Renegades of Funk’. This was the start of a serious habit, and by the late 80s I was getting the urge to DJ and make music, buying breaks, old funk and jazz records, working hard learning to mix and scratch, doing tapes for friends, spreading the word. This led indirectly to me doing a prime time show on Heatwave Radio, Nottingham’s longest running pirate radio station. Through various hook-ups from the radio, I ended up doing some session scratching on tracks by K.I.D. for Kold Sweat, MSD, Docta D, and Tickle (later known as Frisco). After us hooking up that time, we formed a group, LOST ISLAND, did some 12s, then an album, and now its time to do my own thing.

The last 3 years has seen Styly’s production picked up on far outside the cramped living quarters of UK hip-hop, with tracks licensed to Bomb Hip-Hop Records in the States, and the Lost Island album being licensed for release in Japan. On the UK side a Lost Island track was featured on the recent ‘Raw Materials’ compilation, and a track from this EP has already been licensed for the forthcoming ‘Word Lab 2’ compilation on Wordplay/Source. He’s also provided tracks for the recent UK hip-hop film ‘Rage’ as well as sorting out the finale track for the star of the film Frasier Ayre (and getting his own ugly mug all up in the piece in the film itself). So take some time to check out Styly’s steez, cos he’s around for the duration.
